Duplex stainless steels are named for its two-phase microstructure, which is made up of 50 percent austenitic and 50 percent ferritic stainless steel grains. Due to its improved strength – it is nearly twice as strong as typical ferritic or austenitic stainless steels – this type of steel is commonly selected over traditional ferritic or austenitic stainless steels. Due to the enhanced yield strength of duplex stainless steels, thinner sections can be manufactured, resulting in significant weight savings.
